Saint Paul teaches that love is the fulfilment of God’s commandments. A person who truly loves another will not commit adultery, murder, steal, covet, or deliberately harm a neighbour. All the commandments are gathered together in the command: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Paul announces that the night is far advanced and the day is near. Christians must therefore cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light. To put on the Lord Jesus Christ means allowing His truth, purity, love, and holiness to shape every part of our lives. Saint John proclaims the eternal life that was revealed in Jesus Christ. God is light, and in Him there is no darkness. We cannot claim to have communion with God while deliberately continuing to live in darkness. Walking in the light includes honesty, repentance, communion with others, and trust in the cleansing blood of Jesus. In Acts, Saint Paul recounts how Christ appeared to him on the road to Damascus. Jesus called him to open the eyes of the nations, turn them from darkness to light, and lead them from the power of Satan to God. Paul’s converted life became evidence of the transforming power of divine light. The Gospel reveals that Jesus is the eternal Word who was with God and who is God. Through Him all things were made. He is the true light who enlightens everyone, and the Word became flesh and lived among us. Christ did not remain distant from humanity. The eternal Word entered our darkness and revealed the glory, grace, and truth of the Father. Those who receive Him become children of God. The true response to Christ’s light is to abandon sin, confess our failures, practise love, and walk openly before God. Darkness cannot overcome the light of Christ. Every person who welcomes Him receives grace, truth, forgiveness, and new life.
