Saint Paul teaches that the Day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. Christians, however, do not belong to darkness. Through Christ, they have become children of light and children of the day. The proper preparation for the Lord’s coming is therefore not fear, speculation, or panic. Christians must remain spiritually awake, sober, faithful, and clothed with faith, love, and the hope of salvation. They must encourage and strengthen one another while awaiting Christ. Saint Peter teaches that the present world will not remain forever. Because everything earthly will pass away, believers must ask themselves what kind of people they ought to be. They are called to holy conduct, devotion, peace, and faithful expectation of the new heavens and the new earth, where righteousness dwells. In Acts, Saint Peter proclaims that Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, is both Lord and Messiah. King David died and was buried, but Christ was not abandoned to death. His resurrection and exaltation reveal that He is the promised Savior and eternal King. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that His words will never pass away. Heaven and earth may pass, but the word of Christ remains forever. He warns His disciples not to allow their hearts to become burdened by worldly pleasures, drunkenness, anxiety, or distraction. They must remain watchful and prayerful. The Christian prepares for Christ by living each day in His light. We must remain awake in faith, encourage one another, resist spiritual carelessness, and live in holiness. The person who walks with Christ today does not need to fear His coming tomorrow.
