Jesus declares that He is the true vine and that His disciples are the branches. A branch cannot produce fruit by itself; it must remain united to the vine. In the same way, Christians cannot live a holy and fruitful life without remaining united to Christ through faith, prayer, the Eucharist, obedience, and love. Saint Paul calls believers to imitate God and walk in love, following the example of Christ, who gave Himself for us. Christians must leave behind impurity, greed, foolish speech, and every work of darkness. They are called to live as children of light, producing goodness, righteousness, and truth. Saint James teaches that spiritual maturity is revealed especially through our words. The tongue can bless God, but it can also wound people created in God’s image. Heavenly wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, merciful, sincere, and full of good fruit. Earthly jealousy and selfish ambition produce disorder. In Acts, Saint Peter learns through a vision that he must not call unclean what God has made clean. God’s saving grace is not limited to one people or nation. The Church must receive all those whom God calls and must never place human prejudice above the work of the Holy Spirit. The vine blossoms when Christians remain in Christ, control their speech, walk in love, reject prejudice, and welcome those whom God welcomes. The fruit God desires is love, joy, peace, mercy, holiness, and unity.
